Teaching - INDIA
Kit List

What to bring on your Teaching Placement?

The best advice is to bring as little as possible, especially if you plan to go travelling after you finish your placement. Below are a few suggestions from past volunteers:

General
  • Small rucksack along with your main rucksack
  • Light clothes
  • Waterproof especially in the rainy season, Sept-Oct
  • Swimming gear
  • Towel (travel towel or hand towel is adequate)
  • Sunglasses
  • Sun protection cream
  • Sleeping liner
  • Basic toiletry kit
  • Lip balm
  • Novels to read
  • A small address book with your friends and family's telephone numbers and e-mail addresses.
  • Travellers cheques, credit card only be used in large Indian cities such as Madurai
  • Money belt
  • Photocopy of all important documents
  • ISIC card
  • Torch
  • Plug adaptor if you are taking electric equipment
  • Universal sink plug
  • Mosquito net & repellent lots!
  • Medical kit
  • Sanitary towels
  • Baby Wipes
  • Concentrated hand/face wash
  • Cell phone (which can accept third party SIM cards). WE will help you to buy a local SIM on arrival at your project and this is the easiest and cheapest way of staying in touch with other volunteers in India.
  • Water bottle

Specifically for your Project
  • Teaching materials e.g. photos, postcards, posters, magazines (Please see Teaching Ideas Pack for further information).
  • Small English grammar book
  • Smart casual clothes for teaching
  • Swimming gear

Female volunteers must also respect the local culture and make sure they cover up when in public. As a basic rule the only part of the body showing should be the forearms and head.
